Visit Rwanda deal does not ‘match ethics’ of PSG – Mulumbu

Former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu has criticized the club’s sponsorship deal with the Rwandan government, saying it does not align with the club’s ethical principles.

PSG signed a multi-million dollar deal with the Rwandan tourism board in 2018, which includes advertising the country’s tourism destinations on the players’ shirts and across the Parc des Princes stadium.

Mulumbu, who played for PSG between 2008 and 2010, believes that the partnership with Rwanda, a country with a controversial human rights record, contradicts the club’s values.

He stated, “I find it problematic that PSG, a club with a global fan base and influence, would enter into a partnership with a government that has been criticized for its human rights violations.”

The former midfielder urged PSG to reconsider their sponsorship deals and prioritize partnerships that are in line with the club’s ethics and values.

PSG has not responded to Mulumbu’s comments, but the club has defended its partnership with Rwanda as a way to promote the country’s tourism industry and showcase its natural beauty to a global audience.

Despite the controversy, the Visit Rwanda deal has been a lucrative one for PSG, providing a significant source of revenue for the club.

Mulumbu’s criticism adds to the ongoing debate around sports sponsorship deals and the ethical considerations that clubs should take into account when entering into partnerships with governments and corporations.

It remains to be seen whether PSG will take any action in response to Mulumbu’s comments or if they will continue their partnership with Rwanda in the future.

Overall, the debate highlights the complex relationship between sports, politics, and business, and the need for clubs to carefully consider the ethical implications of their sponsorship deals.
